Totara Faces of Reasons For Voyaging, 2003
Totara panels on the south face of Reasons for Voyaging. The Totara log recovered following storm damage on the West Coast was gifted to the project by Ngāi Tahu who reserve this protected wood for special art work. The log was blessed by Māori in the customary manner before being milled – the surfaces retain evidence of the cutting devices - chainsaw, wide-bite circular saw, bandsaw. The panel junctions make reference to voyaging-vaka construction. Over the past 20 years the patina on the faces have slowly weathered changing from deep red to silvery grey.
